The Soft Overcomes the Hard
By Tatiana Berg
Materials: Oil & spray paint on canvas
Dimensions: 48" x 48" x 35"
About the Artist:
Whether you call it New Casualism or Provisional Painting, the next wave of painterly abstraction is driven not by ideology but by a hunger for improvisation, flexibility, and fun, a desire to not take shit quite so seriously anymore. Yet Tatiana Berg’s loose, bombastic paintings, brushed and sprayed onto flat canvases or three-dimensional “tent” structures, are anything but lazy. They make up an intensely pursued formalist investigation into the culture at large, nabbing their energy as much from primetime television, pop music, and blockbuster movies as they do art history.
Berg is under the spotlights performing for us, tirelessly snapping out jokes and riffs, constantly risking failure for the sake of entertaining herself and her audience. The artist isn’t afraid of dying on stage because there’s always another line waiting up her sleeve.
